News: I am afraid to say we are currently out of Asparagus Crowns until further notice we can still take orders for next year if you would like to pre order.

At Harlow Plants we grow quality asparagus crowns from seed in pots. This is where we differ from the traditional growing methods, where bare crowns are removed from the soil and frequently get damaged, dry out and die.  By raising the plants in modules and potting them on into larger containers critical damage to the roots can be avoided and the plants remain fresh and healthy. Once transplanted into the ground our potted crowns adapt quickly to their new soil conditions and have a head start.  This method also allows the planting season to be extended because the plants can be planted even after the shoots have started to grow in spring. We are able to inspect the root systems before despatch to ensure that crowns are of a good size and quality.

Tray of Asparagus

Apart from having the reputation of being an aphrodisiac, asparagus also used to be thought of as difficult to grow and taking a long time to crop. This is no longer the case: top quality F1 hybrid asparagus plants, which yield up to twice as much as the old open- pollinated varieties, combined with new growing techniques make growing your own asparagus both easy and worthwhile. In fact it is easier for the gardener to grow asparagus than the commercial grower, because the gardener doesn't have problems of large-scale weed control and expensive labour for planting and harvesting.

Nor do you have to wait long: if you plant now you should be serving up your own succulent, fresh asparagus by the summer after next and thereafter for the next 12-15 years.

The superb flavour of English asparagus is considered to surpass that of asparagus from any other part of the world. This is because it is particularly suited to our climate and because it reaches the shops soon after harvesting. Your own asparagus should be fresher and even tastier..
