Questions and AnswersWhy do you grow the crowns in pots?For many reasons:
What soil does asparagus prefer to grow in?Well drained soil. Jersey Knight, which is the variety we grow, can live happily in heavy soil, though it is recommended to dig in sand and grit for improved drainage. It likes to grow in soil of a ph of 6.5-7, which can be aided by the application of lime. What planting position does asparagus like?It wants a sunny position facing south with shelter from heavy winds. What variety of asparagus do you grow?We grow a variety of Asparagus called Jersey Knight, which is suited to the UK climate. It is an F1 hybrid which yields more than open pollinated varieties. It produces on average a basal thickness of 2cm per spear . What is the planting season?It is February to March for open rooted crowns but because ours are in pots you can plant right up to the end of June. How do I look after my plants once I have brought them?We provide you with a cultural leaflet about asparagus husbandry. Also If you have any questions you can phone us - this only applies to customers who have brought from us or who wish to place an order. How many plants do I need?That depends on how much you like asparagus - check our plants page. When can I start harvesting?Once plants are fully established - generally in the third year of planting. How long does the harvesting season last?It lasts from when the first spears appear, usually around the beginning of May to the second to last week of June, depending upon the health of the plant. What are the delivery charges?That depends on your order. It is calculated on weight - we can give you a guide on the order page. Note- We try and make the plants as light as possible. Can I collect my plants from the nursery?Yes you can - a day can be arranged for you to collect your order. What pests and diseases can asparagus get?Asparagus beetle; slugs; crown and root rot. Violet root is incurable, dock is a carrier make sure the area is cleared systemically off all docks. Jersey Knight is resistant to fusarium wilt. |
